You've had a great preseason. Players are fitter than ever. Everybody's packed some muscle on over the summer, dropped a shed load of body fat, and now that shiny new kit looks too tight on the arms rather than around the waist!
But you can't win a game!
Surely it can't be the S&C coaches fault.
You've done your job, just look at the testing results! Body fat down, lean muscle mass up. Faster times over 10 and 40 metres. More agile, more robust, and fitter at everything!
Apart from rugby...
Don't worry though, they'll get there (if you know what your doing!)
There are two schools of thought with preparation for team sports. Some coaches will look at the needs of the sport and prepare for worst case scenarios. Running, wrestling and ball skills for 3-4 minutes blocks. That's about as long as you'll ever go for a sequence in a rugby match. Everything is sports specfic and gets related back to the game. This method certainly has it's benefits, definitely at a lower level of performance.
Do you separate all the physical qualities and make sure you improve in each specific area in the hpe that when you put it all back together you will have a supercharged version of your old self. Guess what? This method has it's benefits too!
S&C Coaches 1 & 2 might have different approaches, but will still have produced a fitter, faster, stronger group of players who are capable of winning matches.
So if you haven't won your first few games this season, don't despair that things aren't going to get better! Keep working hard, believe that you've set the players in the right direction, and keep striving to be a positive influence on the group.
Focus on these two key areas:
1) Try to build a good relationship with the technical coach and make sure the fitness levels you are working towards suit the style of play they're trying to implement.
2) Get to know the players. They're different animals once the season starts! Some people need an arm round their shoulders and others need a rocket up their backside!
One of the biggest influences you can have as S&C coach is from your personality. Stay upbeat, stay happy and keep on top of those fitness levels! The players will sort out winning and losing matches, you're just helping them to help themselves!
